Utah Fly Fishing Challenge Tournament Format

The Utah Fly Fishing challenge ia a one day two-Fly fishing tournament event that will take place on the Middle Provo River. The Tournament will consist of 40 two person teams.  Each participating angler will choose only two flies that he or she will use for the entire day.  An Angler may decide to change their fly pattern for a monetary charge of $10.00 each time.   All proceeds to benefit the National Ability Center. All fishing beats will be drawn by lottery. There will be a shotgun start at 9:00a.m.  Only one Angler fishes at a time. A judge will score the largest fish from each individual Angler.

Tournament Rules

·        Each team consists of two anglers.

·        Each angler must record his or her own largest fish to be put in the team total.

·        One angler fishes at a time; the team may choose which angler fishes first.  At any time, the “active” angler can physically tag the other team member to switch positions.

·        The judge will score the largest fish from each individual angler; each angler must record his own largest fish.  Each individual’s recorded fish will then be added together for a team total.

·        Once the first angler’s fish is recorded, the second angler will fish until he or she has recorded a fish.  After two fish have been recorded, each angler will have the option of trying to catch a larger fish to record, or “sign off” with the judge on their team total.  However by continuing to fish, the original scored fish is eliminated from the team total.

·        The total length caught by a team will comprise its score for the competition and will be compared against other opponents’ scores.  Scores will be tallied by inches and measured to the ¼” by rounding up if necessary.

·        In the event of a tie-break, those applicable teams will enter a lottery draw to determine 1st and 2nd place winners.

Scoring

·        Each participating angler will choose only two flies that he or she will use to start the Tournament day. If a fly is lost, it may be replaced with the exact same size and pattern that was originally used to begin the Tournament.  A participant’s fly pattern may be changed at anytime for a monetary contribution of $10 each time.   Judges will tally contributions for each angler.  All monies generated from this event will be donated to the National Ability Center.

·        All fishing will take place on sections of the Provo River.

·        All interested applicants must enter the tournament in teams of two.

·        All participating teams will be required to fish two three hour sessions.  The first session will start at 9:00am, and the second session at 2:00pm.  Each angler may choose two new flies to start the second session.  However the same monetary contribution of $10 still applies for each time anglers wish to change their fly pattern.  All team standings will be posted after each fishing session.

·        Participants are requested to provide all of their own equipment, including flies. If you do not have your own equipment, the Jans Fly Shop at Rivers Edge, will have flies for purchase, and Rods and Waders for rent.  All anglers are required to have a current Utah fishing license.

·        Participating teams agree that they will not fish the competition waters for a period of one week prior to the commencement of the competition.

·        Only one angler may fish at a time.  Anglers may physically tag their partner to designate the other as the “active”  fisherman.  Anglers must always use their own Rods.

·        Each angler is allowed one rod and one landing net of his choosing.  All flies used must be single barbless hooks; sorry no “trailing” or “stinger” hooks are allowed.

·        Team mates are allowed to help net each others’ fish.

·        All fish must be released safely.  A fish that is improperly handled will not be considered a recorded fish.  Judges will make that determination.

·        Foul hooked fish will not be counted (a foul hooked fish is any fish not caught “inside” the mouth).

·        Only trout will be judged as recorded fish in the competition (no whitefish, etc.).

·        One judge will accompany every two-person team.  The judges’ sole responsibility is to measure and record fish length and keep individual angler fly tallies.  Judges are not allowed to offer recommendations, advise or help net any angler’s fish.
